An ascender,
also known
as a jumar is used for
ascending up a rope when
climbing is not possible. The
device, which relies on a cam
for its functionality, will slide
up a rope in one direction but
will clamp to the rope when
pulled in the opposite
direction.
The ascender is attached
to the climbers harness and
then clipped to the rope and
locked.
