Submited By: Paolo Casigli on 05/12/2010 I usually buy Beal ropes, but this Edelrid Cobra was on sale at a good price and after all I thought it was an opportunity to try a rope of a different brand.
I bought a 70 m for sport and multi-pitch and a 50 m that I chopped in two halves for indoors use.
The Cobra is a rather fat rope (10.3 mm), and you feel it on long or multipitch routes, especially if you are involved in some
tricky hanging belay where you would be very happy to swap a thick rope for an easy to handle one.
Even compared to a fatter Beal Top Gun (10.5 mm) the handling is not as good as, and especially in the
intense indoors use I noticed that this rope gets twisted. No matter which end you pull down after a route, at the next it still gets
twisted and you'll struggle to feed it through the GriGri.
Otherwise it's a good rope, low impact force, acceptable weight, very resistant: after months of use the sheath is still in a good condition.
In my opinion if you are prepared to trade some handling performance for a longer lasting rope it's a good choice, if performance drives you
definitely it is not the best you can buy.
