Submited By: Hannah Mueller on 24/11/2010 I've used this device a few times now, and I must say I'm not impressed. What got me interested in it is the offbeat, puristic design of it. Putting a rubber coat around it so your hands don't burn and it can't jingle is a brilliant idea and works well. You can vary the amount of friction, depending on how you insert the rope in it.
However, I haven't figured out just HOW to use the thing without the rope blocking all the time. The manufacturer's information that it's suitable for ropes up to 10.5mm is quite optimistic, to say the very least. My rope is 9.1mm and relatively new and it's just a pain to belay with the Jul. It may be tolerable to belay beginners toproaping in the gym, but I wouldn't recommend to belay lead climbing with it.
Maybe that's just what you get for such a low price, who knows? You'll be better off with a different belaying device, for example the Petzl Reverso 3 or the Black Diamond ATC.
