Rating: of 5 Stars!

The Petzl Bug was designed specifically for multipitch, long routes that are done in a single day. Its rounded rectangular shape maximizes volume and minimizes interference while in use. The volume of the BUG is ideal for carrying gear on the approach and when climbing (hydration system, guidebook/topo, clothing, shoes, etc). Everything has been designed for maximum comfort while climbing with the BUG on the back: minimal bulk, shoulder straps allowing freedom of arm movement, comfortable and ventilated back panel, foldaway waistbelt, high positioning allows access to back of harness(for chalkbag, gear) and lateral compression straps.

  • Carries high on the back:

    • allows for easy access to the back of your harness(gear loops, chalk bags, etc)
    • enables a rope to be strapped to the bottom of the pack(carry straps)
    • waistbelt provides additional carry comfort for heavy loads and tucks away for freedom of movement when climbing
  • Lateral compression straps:

    • allow the pack to be compressed, preventing the contents from shifting while climbing
    • allows you to carry a jacket on the outside
  • Rounded rectangular shape:

    • great balance between volume and shape provides plenty of room for gear without interfering while climbing
    • reduces wear from abrasion
  • Wide, ergonomically shaped shoulder straps:

    • comfortable while wearing the pack
    • stable on the back even without using waistbelt
    • provides freedom of movement while climbing
    • adjustable height sternum strap enhances security and comfort
  • Single top opening with handle:

    • sturdy attachment point,
    • helps to keep everything safely stored when open
  • Daisy chain, side compression and rope carrying straps allow for more gear carrying options
  • Astute design includes a guidebook pocket on the outside for quick and easy access, attachment loop for an e+LITE (emergency headlamp), zippered mesh pocket with key clip, small pocket on the shoulder strap for a topo map, as well as being hydration system compatible.

If you're considering this bag I recommend you buy something bigger (and maybe with a rain cover). I bought this with a lake district trip in mind where I'd be walking, climbing easy multipitch, walking further on, climbing harder multipitch and then walking home a different route to the one I came. When this arrived, I thought about it and sent it back. Its too small for a day out with uncertain weather on multipitch trad. It looks better for the actual climbing but you'd have to pack it in a bigger bag (like Poalo) but if your just climbing with it then you don't need the gear straps, rope loop and map pocket - you just need a normal pack, preferrably a water proof one (this one isn't). I'm surprised other reviews found it so practical. Its well made and full of features but i think its a bit of a gimic. I think there are not more bags like it for a reason. I do see one guy using one everyday but hes justing going the office.

I was looking for a backpack for a multipitch project in Sardinia that required to stay few hours on a hot crag . The Petzl Bug has been a good choice: I have been climbing in total comfort carrying three bottles of drink, climbing guide, camera, mobile phone etc. The Bug is well ventilated, it fits quite high on the back so that it is never in the way when you need to get gear from the back of the harness or you need chalk. The lateral compression straps are perfect to prevent the content from bouncing inside. The waist-belt and the shoulder straps also do a great job in keeping it steady on your back. The two internal pockets and the external one are very handy. I think the Bug has the right size for a multi-pitch adventure: what you can carry in it is just what you want to have on your shoulders when you climb. The full volume can be probably used only if you need to carry a jacket or anything bulky but lightweight. As for using it to carry gear to the crag, in my opinion it is a bit small for the job , and I think that sometimes it could be more straightforward wearing harness and gear than squeezing them inside it and trying to get the rope correctly in the straps. I put mine empty inside a bigger rucksack and used it only for climbing. A very good item for this price.

Excellent bag for a days worth of climbing. Climbing with this bag on is a breeze; shoulder straps are nicely padded and vented all over to avoid getting too hot and sweaty and with the stowable waist strap there is no chance of it moving around your back when attempting the hardest routes. This bag isn't the largest of bags, but with all the additional loops and straps you can fit more than enough into/onto it! The additional map pocket allows quick and easy access to your crucial paperwork (very similar to a laptop pouch you see on normal rucksacks), although this pocket is only held closed by a single magnet catch, so I wouldn't recommend tipping the bag upside down to avoid anything falling out. Hydration pack compatibility works well, with a separate mesh pocket inside the bag and a clip on the shoulder strap. My only gripe with this is that there isn't much protection from the rest of your gear in your bag so you do need to pack wisely. The main problem I have with this bag is the the straps that hang below the bag, designed to carry your rope. They do a very good job but the problem I have found with them is its not easy to get the rope attached. To attach the rope you must loosen the the straps, slide the rope into the straps and then do them up. It seems like it would be a lot easier to have clip buckles attached to the straps so you can just unclip, wrap the straps round the rope and clip and tighten. To give an example of how much you can fit into/onto this bag, my usual set up is as follows: Inside the bag: Harness, set of 10 quick draws, various slings and carabiners, ATC and figure of eight, 2 Litre platypus hydration pack, mini first aid kit, snacks, Petzl e+LITE attached to included strap. Map and other paperwork inside the additional map pocket. Outside the bag: 50 meter 10mm rope, helmet and shoes attached to daisy chain, coat/jumper and rope mat attached to compression straps. This ends up being quite a weight, but I have seen no signs of wear on any part of the bag! I haven’t tried this bag with a full trad gear set, but I would imagine it would be a push to take a massive set, although this could be helped by wearing your harness and helmet on the approach. Overall a highly recommended bag for a days worth of climbing, or even as an everyday bag. The only problem I have had with it is the design of the straps to hold the rope, but that is more of an inconvenience than a problem.
