Rating: of 5 Stars!

The Wild Country VC Pro 2 Belay Device has been a huge success since its launch and minor tweaks for 2008 have improved it yet again. To give a smoother for fatter cords the bottom of the device has been flattened out which keeps the biner a bit further away and decreases grab. To give even more bite on ever decreasing diameter skinny ropes, the v-slots have been deepened to give a firmer grip to accomodate double ropes down to 7.7mm and singles down to 9mm. Sitting beautifully in the hand the VC Pro 2 is easy, forgiving and obvious to use, even for beginners. Experts will also admire its adaptability because like the original VC it can be used in two modes, either ‘slick’ or with more ‘bite’ depending on circumstance and ropes chosen.

Weight - 79g (2.79 oz)

Rope Diameters - > 7.7mm Double, > 9mm Single

Wild Country VC Pro 2 Belay Device Reviews

Submited By: Samuel Harris on 24/11/2010
Belay devices are essential to climbing and when you’re precariously hanging on with one hand in an awkward position trying to clip you don’t want your belayers to lock up. Unfortunately the VC Pro 2, at least in my experience, seems to lock up frequently when belaying on lead. I believe that the reason it feeds so badly is because they have got the distance between the carabineer and the top of the belay device wrong and therefore the bend in the rope that causes the friction is far too sharp; as the device is smoother when a second carabineer is placed between the belay device and the belay carabineer increasing the distance. However the very similar shaped Black Diamond ATC XP is able to feed rope smoothly; which probably explains why most of the time it seems to be sold out while the VC Pro 2 is still very much in stock. I therefore recommend that you try to get your hands on an ATC XP instead.

far too much friction on fatter ropes when i used it. Completely looks up as you try and pull rope through when someone is ascending. It was so bad i used it for one session and immediately replaced it with a DMM bug.

I bought this as a set with a WC HMS Krab, and basically they work very well together. I've used it on ropes between 9 and 11 mm, singles and doubles, at the climbing wall and at crags, and it even works well when bring two people up at once. The V notch is nice, I turn ot round on thinner ropes, with heavier partners, and particularly when I take my kids to the wall and they are belaying each other. Allows them to hold falls a lot easier, and even though the friction is higher I've seen no evidence of damage to the rope. All in all a fine product.
