Instinct Lace

The Scarpa Instinct Lace is a great all round performer for sport climbing, bouldering and hard trad routes. The lace system allows for a really accurate fit so your foot placements will be even more precise and power is transfered better through the shoe.

This latest evolution of the Instinct lace is far lighter and more sensitive than the old version. The new design features a microfibre upper and 3/4 outsole along with a TPU cage which acts to support the foot and reduce torsional movement and roll during edging. It has also been updated with the same heel cup as the VS, which has proven to be a far better fit for the majority of people.

The Instinct Lace is built on an aggressive last to get more power through your toes and also so that you can pull on holds when climbing overhanging routes. The sensitive nature of the design means you can really feel where you are placing your feet, and the super grippy Vibram XS Edge rubber will ensure they stay there.

How I choose the correct size?

All climbing shoe models fit differently. We put together our 'shoeculator' to help you find the right size in a new model, compared to your old climbing shoes or street shoes.

Choose from the options below to find your size in the Scarpa Instinct Lace
Climbing Shoe
or
Street Shoe

This sizing advice is based on two pairs of brand new shoes. Leather shoes tend to stretch more than synthetic shoes. When switching from synthetic to leather you may want to select a smaller size.

For me Scarpa Instinct is version 2.0 of La Sportiva Miura.

The heel feels just about the same as Miura's. Slight downturn makes these shoes definitely more dialed to short steep routes. Despite the toe patch these are not the best shoe for toe hooking. Otherwise I enjoy the performance. Stepping on all kinds of holds on facewalls and overhangs is awesome.

I have weird feet with slight morton's toe, wide ball of the foot, high arch and medium to low volume heel. These shoes are among the best fitting for me. Suede feels nice and conforms a bit, but the stretch is minimal. I guess someone with low volume feet and square toe profile may find these shoes horrible fit.

My street shoe size is about 41,5. I have two pairs of Instincts, sizes 39,5 and 40. The smaller pair is reserved as a sending shoe for bouldering. Size 40 is much more comfortable, just as precise on small holds and gives better friction when smearing.

I wore these shoes in the gym the first couple of times i used them and they felt great. I had plastic bags to slip them on due to getting them quite tight (i'm EU 42 in boostics but got these in 41). Even still they stretch like crazy, they feel quite a bit larger than before just due to so much leather, which is expected.
Then i took them bouldering outdoors and they got stuffed. The toes rubber is fantastic for toe hooking for the first couple of sessions and then it starts peeling away; then the stitching underneath this toe hook rubber starts splitting. I've had them for four months and already almost all of the rubber on the toe is gone. With a shoes that has a special point for toe hooks you'd think it would stay on. Also i noticed that when climbing on smoother rock such as limestone the toe rubber loses it's tack and becomes quite polished and slippery.
Besides all of this the fit is rad, feels like a sock, a very tight sock. The laces go high enough that there's no way that heel is gonna pop off even on the most desperate heels.

Great shoe!
Have a streetsize eu40.5, sized em to 38,5 for a tight fit!
I have pretty wide feets, and even though i sized em down 2 sizes i can have it all day long!

I climb 3-4 days a week, now during the summer 100% of the climbing is done outside... both bouldering and Sport.
Sad to say there aint much more rubber left on these after 4 months of climbing. Probably says something about my climbing skill, but i had a pair of solutions and they lasted 8months also had Evolv pontas and they too lasted about 8-10months...

Expensive for 4 months of use, but i probably will buy another pair and try to handle them a bit more carefull and see if its the skills or the shoe that make them not so long-lasting.

Really not sure how the above poster can have anywhere near a good fit with a 9 uk foot and a 9 uk instinct. I would ignore it.

For what it's worth, I think Bananafingers' sizer for scarpa shoes is out by about 1/2 a size.

For a UK 9 bouldering fit, you want a UK7, for a firm but very very slightly baggy heel when toe is pointed, say a hard trad shoe, a UK7.5. Any larger than this and you may as well stick to a Force or Vapour.

This is how v12Outdoor fit them in store, and seems to make sense for me.

As to the shoe:

It's basically a miura, but with a slightly wider footbox and worse laces and more toe rubber (they take ages to get undone/do up). Heel, rubber, and sole is all pretty similar. If you want miuras but have board feet, get these.
