Instinct VS-R

$111.62
$152.91

The Scarpa Instinct VS-R is essentially a softer version of the incredibly popular Instinct VS, it uses the same last and rand as the VS for high levels of sensitivity and accurate foot placements. The VS-R has a semi-aggressive profile will work well at any angle but will still allow you to pull in on holds when on overhanging terrain.

The use of a softer mid-sole and Vibram XS Grip rubber makes for a more all round round performance rather than being a bit more biased towards edging like the Instinct VS and also makes them more sensitive.

A Lorica upper means greater flexibility and durability but it will also hold its shape better than leather and a combination of an elasticated slipper system and a velcro closure holds your foot securely in place.

How I choose the correct size?

All climbing shoe models fit differently. We put together our 'shoeculator' to help you find the right size in a new model, compared to your old climbing shoes or street shoes.

Choose from the options below to find your size in the Scarpa Instinct VS-R
Climbing Shoe
or
Street Shoe

This sizing advice is based on two pairs of brand new shoes. Leather shoes tend to stretch more than synthetic shoes. When switching from synthetic to leather you may want to select a smaller size.

Customer questions

Q

Hi there! Would these have similar sizing to Instinct VS or the Furia? I currently am using a pair of Furia's in 41.5EU. Additionally, how much would it be and how long would it take for shipping to Perth, Australia. Thanks, Patrick

A

My colleague actually wears the same size in both the VS and the Furia. However, if you wear different sizes then I would suggest going with your VS sizing because the VS-R is built on the same last.

If generally overhanging climbs are your thing, buy these.

These are the best climbing shoes I have ever had. By far.
I've tried all the usual 5:10, Sportiva, Evolv etc over almost twenty years. Flat, asymmetric, downturned - the lot.

The combination of a vacuum fit, perfect heel, great sensitivity, sensible downturn and a very stable platform kind of do everything really well.
The only time I would reach for something else is to edge harder, and then the VS have that covered. I have some Miura VS for edging, but 95% of the time I will reach for these indoors.

Another thing that seems unique to these remarkable shoes is the stretch. My feet are slightly different sizes and I normally buy two pairs to make one that fits. These somehow stretch in a controlled way. I cannot quite understand how, but basically they seem to mould to your foot. So I only need to buy one pair.

I visited the Banana fingers shop and Tom let me try plenty of shoes on. He started by saying that these would be the ticket, then we tried loads on anyway. I will be a customer for life.

Had these for 6 weeks now and happy with them. Sizing is generally consistent across the Scarpa range - they fit exactly like my Vapor V in the same size. I also have Furias in the same size, but the Furia fits a shade tigher. Fit wise they are slightly wider than most across the forefoot knuckle so nice for wide feet. The heel is also snug. Some climbing shoes tend to "barrel" into a tube shape on the foot, squeezing from the sides, while these stay in a flat foot shape. They're very comfy.

I haven't tried the original Instinct so can't compare, but I agree with the manufacturers' description that this is a moderately aggressive shoe, moderately downturned and decent for any angle of overhang. Athough they are marketed as a "softer version of the instince VS" they are still nowhere near as soft as the Furias. I'd call this an all round shoe for bouldering/sport, where the Furia is a steeps specialist.
